Halloween night: Saturday, Oct. 31

The police department recommends trick-or-treating between 5 and 9 p.m. It will quadruple patrol staffing that night, and officers will hand out candy and LED safety lights so children stay visible to drivers, according to its 2026 Halloween release. Officers will also watch parking in neighborhoods. The department asked residents and visitors not to block roadways, driveways or emergency access. Our story has the full patrol plan.

Safety

The police department points to Safe Kids Worldwide, which says children are more than twice as likely to be struck and killed by a vehicle on Halloween as on any other day. The release lists why children are at more risk: they take the shortest route, which can mean darting out between parked cars; they are poor at judging traffic; they pay less attention to what is around them; and they can be distracted by other children’s costumes and decorations. The department’s advice:

  • Make sure costumes can be seen by drivers at night, with reflective material or lights.
  • Cross at corners, not between parked cars.
  • Remind children that some drivers will not slow down for them.
  • Drivers: slow down in neighborhoods and watch for children darting out.
  • Report unsafe driving or mischief right away at 615-754-2550.
