Restaurants, food trucks and other food service kitchens in Mount Juliet are inspected by the Tennessee Department of Health (TDH), not by the city or Wilson County government. Each inspection produces a score out of 100 and a written report. You can read the reports on the state’s online inspection search, and every restaurant must post its most recent report where customers can see it.

Five Tennessee counties run their own restaurant inspections under contract with the state: Davidson, Hamilton, Knox, Madison and Shelby. Wilson County is not one of them, so a restaurant in Mount Juliet is inspected by the state. Across the county line in Davidson County, in Hermitage or Old Hickory, Davidson County’s own program does the work.

How the score works

  • Scale: inspections are scored out of 100.
  • Below 70: the department has said that places that do not reach 70 on an inspection get a follow-up inspection within 15 days and coaching on what to fix.
  • How often: the department has said inspectors visit each food service location at least twice a year, with both scheduled and unannounced visits.
  • What they check: food temperatures and protection, employee hygiene, water and sewage, restrooms and hand washing, waste, pests, cleaning and sanitizing of equipment, lighting and ventilation, and storage of cleaning chemicals.
  • The posted report: the department has described the posted report as printed on bright yellow paper with the score in large numbers.

The rules inspectors use are the Tennessee Food Safety Rules, based on the federal Food and Drug Administration food code.

How to look up a restaurant

  1. Go to the state’s inspection reports search.
  2. Search by the restaurant’s name, or by “Mt. Juliet” or “Mount Juliet” (check both spellings).
  3. Open the inspection to see the score, the date, each violation and whether it was fixed on site.

A single score is a snapshot of one visit. Read the violations and look at the place’s last few inspections before drawing conclusions, and note whether a follow-up was needed.

Grocery and convenience stores

The Tennessee Department of Agriculture inspects retail food stores and posts scores for inspections on or after April 3, 2023, on its retail food establishments page. Under its rules, a store scoring below 70 needs a follow-up inspection.

Food trucks and event vendors

Temporary food stands at festivals are also covered by the state’s Environmental Health Program, which surveys vendors and organizers. The City of Mt. Juliet separately requires food trucks at city park events to apply through Parks and Recreation.

What this means for you

  • Look for the posted inspection report when you walk in.
  • Check the state database for the full list of violations, not just the number.
  • Report a suspected foodborne illness to the state or the Wilson County Health Department.
